Knauf’s commitment to sustainable development is reflected in their manufacturing processes, product development and long term strategic planning. Their environmental commitment drives both day to day and long term decision making as Knauf strives to meet the demand for high quality building materials which satisfy the stringent selection criteria for Green Star building projects.

Knauf products were selected for the new Sydney Water headquarters at 1 Smith Street, Parramatta, which exemplifies modern sustainable building design, featuring water and energy efficiency and recycling. The building has been designed by architectural firm Woods Baggot to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent and reduce use of drinking water by 75 percent compared to a typical office building.

MastaShield and FireShield were used in the building as Sydney Water specified that, where possible, construction material was to be made from renewable sources or have high recycled content and have been produced with minimal greenhouse gas production and ozone depletion.

Robert Migliorino of Cubic Interiors, selected and installed the Knauf plasterboard in the office fit-out and mandatory fire escape areas. “We used MastaShield and FireShield because it is high quality plasterboard and it meets environmental sustainability criteria.”

“Knauf products contain recycled content and are locally manufactured. By reducing the energy used in transportation we can minimise greenhouse gas production and ozone depletion.” said Robert.

The ability of Knauf products and systems to meet the environmental requirements of the Sydney Water Building demonstrate the company’s commitment to sustainability. As one of the world’s largest plasterboard manufacturers, any improvement Knauf can make to reduce their environmental footprint can have a significant impact on the global result. The strength and growth of the business will drive further environmental improvements to the manufacturing processes. This enables continued advancements and efficiencies so Knauf can produce more plasterboard with less impact on natural resources.
