Safety Management
Knauf's Safety Management System starts with a Safety Policy that holds all employees responsible and accountable. The policy is supported by eleven Health & Safety rules designed to reinforce our commitment to the well-being of our employees. The Safety Management System includes safety manuals and product MSDS and is managed by the Safety Council comprising senior Knauf managers.
Safety Programs
Knauf has issued a number of mandatory Health & Safety standards that provide general safety guidance for employees and visitors alike, as well are mandating equipment and process changes to improve safety. Below are examples of areas Knauf has deemed as requiring a standard.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is safety clothing and equipment for specified circumstances or areas, where the nature of the work involved or the conditions under which people are working, require its wearing or use to minimise personal risk.
Working at Height (WAH)
Working at Heights refers to any work activities being undertaken at an elevated position. There are risks associated with working from any elevated position. Controls have been put in place to ensure people working at a height of 1.8 metres or more are prevented from falling. Routine elevated tasks performed below 1.8 metres need a risk assessment to be performed.
Conveyor Safety
Conveyors are by nature, inherently dangerous. Due to continuously moving components and the high rate of materials transported, the forces applied by belt conveyors are significant and potentially dangerous. Therefore, it is essential that safe work practices and conveyor safety training requirements be clearly understood and integrated to achieve safe production.
Stockpile advisory
Manufacturing plants are involved in the management of stock and surge piles. Raw material stockpiles are constantly changing in size and shape and generally involve a great deal of equipment activity. Stockpiles are generally for temporary storage and ease of flow, and often only exhibit marginal strength. This means danger levels are extremely high.
Safety Performance
Safety Performance is measured and benchmarked monthly. A number of Key Performance Indicators are used including:
- Number of Lost Time injuries
- Number of Medical Treatment injuries
- Medical treatment frequency rate
- Number of First Aid injuries
- Total injury frequency rate
Health and safety are absolute priorities for Knauf. The business has implemented stringent safety policy for its employees. It also participates in public health programs that benefit both employees and local communities.
