Imagine the noise generated by 150 staff working, having lunch and playing table tennis in the workplace. This was the acoustic challenge faced by Daniel Haskell of Haskell Architects who designed the new head office for

Providing a much improved work environment for staff, the new office contains a games room, cafeteria, open plan office and 26 meeting rooms – all on a single floor space of 3000m2.

“We needed to achieve a very high sound rating so all areas of the floor were acoustically separate, particularly when you have staff playing billiards and table tennis in the games room, while meetings are going on the higher the sound rating, the better,” said Haskell.

To achieve maximum sound insulation Haskell specified that Knauf’s 13mm SoundShield be used in the $2 million fitout because of its “high quality and reasonable price.” Michael Damchev, Director of Modern Melbourne Interiors, who installed the plasterboard agreed that using SoundShield enabled them to “achieve quality at a reasonable price.”

Delivery of 22 tonnes of SoundShield to a single storey involved using the Knauf SkyCrane truck and removal of a window. The SkyCrane has a 360-degree multidirectional and expandable fork head which can be used to pivot, turn and tilt sheets up to 6 metres into and out of buildings. “As you can imagine, you can’t place all the sheets in one place, so the load had to be distributed throughout the building” said Damchev.

“The SkyCrane was also able to deliver the sheets standing up vertically, which is the best way to deliver it to offices,” said Michael.
